Chapter 26

Avacyn

Cyn huffed in frustration. Admittedly, it was only the fifth day of spirit training with the late queen, but she had barely made any progress.

She was supposed to search within herself. To find an inner connection to the spirit realm. After five days of trying to meditate herself into a stupor, she still had no clue what she was looking for.

Tired of the inner pursuit, she opened her eyes and looked around. There were slight differences between this realm and her waking world. The landscape’s colors appeared muted. The wind whispered a low and gentle melody. She could not discern any aromatic smells. She hasn’t tried eating yet, but she would bet that would not be normal too. Everything felt muted. Yet, instead of feeling deprived, she felt at peace.

What else could be different? Before she could continue her musings, the late queen interrupted. “Is there something wrong?”

Cyn’s answered laugh was born from agitation rather than amusement. “Is there anything that is going right? I don’t know what I’m doing. I can’t feel any connection.”

“Maybe it’s time to take a break from that exercise. Let’s talk about the spirit gift instead,” Queen Clarisse said.

Placated, Cyn approached and sat down beside the late queen.

“I’ve been reading the books from the secret chambers,” Cyn started. “One mentioned that with the spirit as the core element, Diviners can wield both mystical and healing powers. Which gift do you have?”

“My primary gift was the ability to communicate through spirit. The texts would identify me as a medium. I can create a spirit realm and store some of my essence there. I can do the same, but on a smaller scale, with objects. Like that bird figurine at the secret chamber entrance. My secondary gift is healing. I can manipulate energy to heal wounds.” A lengthy pause before Queen Clarisse continued. “I have a minor ability with precognition. A truly useful gift to have as queen, but since it’s minor, I can best describe mine as a strong intuition. It would tell me whether something I am pursuing is useful.”

“Was that the reason you opened inter-planetary trade on Mesra back then?” Cyn asked.

After a surprised smile from the late queen, she nodded. “Yes, although, in that decision, I was wrong.” The late queen’s expression changed to pensive. “There were unforeseen headaches while the trade routes were open.”

Cyn felt her question hit a nerve. But her natural curiosity pushed her to ask. “Did you want to talk about it?”

“Not today,” Queen Clarisse said. “Perhaps we should talk about your gift. Has it started manifesting?”

Cyn recalled her painful training sessions with Gabriel. “I can copy another’s gift. But only for a few seconds after they have used it. Almost like I am stealing the energy that they generate and using it to form my own. But mirroring their powers. Does that make sense?”

“That is very good Avacyn. You are a Spiritual Mirror. Your gift can attack and defend.” The late queen patted Cyn’s knees gently. “Anything else?”

“No.
